Burning Spear, whose real name is Winston Rodney, is one of the key figures in roots reggae. His music is deeply influenced by Rastafarianism, African identity, and historical oppression.
He began his career in the late 1960s, drawing inspiration from Bob Marley, whom he considered his mentor. In 1969, he released his first single, Door Peep. However, his real breakthrough came with the album Marcus Garvey (1975). His other notable albums include Man in the Hills (1976), Social Living (1978), Hail H.I.M. (1980), and Resistance (1985). In 2000, he won his first Grammy Award for the album Calling Rastafari, and in 2009, he received another Grammy for Jah Is Real.
